Otherside - Music by Naomi Lewis, Animation by Felix Koehler

Ahead of the culmination of our MECHANIKA competition on October 16th in the Brunel Tunnel Shaft, we wanted to introduce some of the incredibly talented composers and visual artists that we will be showcasing, and to find out a little more about their projects. Here’s an interview with composer Adi Chase and animators Vivien Chan and Rosa Fisher about their piece ‘The Penny Drops’...

So, where did you get the inspiration for this project?
We basically had 3 main sources of inspiration. This story is inspired by a fairytale called “The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs”, which includes a part of a ferry man, who is doomed to ship souls from the land of the living to the devil. He is not allowed to leave the boat ever, but gets suggested by the protagonist to just swap places with the next person to ask for his service. We really liked that concept of tricking someone into taking the place and took this as a base for our story.

And did the tunnel shaft space inspire any aspects of the piece?
Definitely! The Brunel tunnel is one of those places in London that are from a different era of London’s history, but haven’t lost their meaning and significance as a place of cultural and industrial advancement. We took this idea of being from a different time and the general concept of the London railway and tried to mix it into this strange little experiment!

And how have you thought about the relationship between music and visuals in this collaboration?
By accenting and punctuating in both visual and musical ways, we intend to create a tight but subtle relationship between the music and the film. By this, we mean that the punctuation will not necessarily be through the characters but of the visuals, therefore creating a voice for the characters through rhythm and texture rather than melody.
